The Story of Dawson's Creek

Dawson's Creek created by Kevin Williamson of "Scream" is by many considered as one of the most magnificent teenage drama that catapulted the principal starcast to instant fame and stardom.

The story of Dawson's Creek is set in the background of a small fictional seaside town called Capeside, Massachusetts. The film was shot in Wilmington and Durham, North Carolina. Dawson's Creek was aired on The WB Television Network from January 20th, 1998 to May 14th 2003. The show is having its reruns in syndication on TBS and The N, and Australia's TV1.

Dawson's Creek which was aimed at the teenage audience revolves around the story of four principal characters in their high school years. The character Dawson Leery [played by James Van Der Beek] reflects the writer-director Kevin Williamson's interests, dreams and ideals. It's a kind of semi-autobiography of Kevin Williamson. Dawson Leery grows up on his passion to make films like his idol Steven Spielberg. At the same time he is romantically involved with the girl-next-door, the cute bubbly Joey Potter.

In the meantime we have Josephine 'Joey' Potter [played by Katie Holmes] the bubbly wily girl-next-door, who was raised by her sister, as she loses her mother to cancer and her father is in jail. While growing up Joey Potter has a crush on Dawson Leery and gets romantically involved with him. They together grow in love as life-long friends and soul mates. But there is always a third angle to their love.

Enter Pacey Witter [played by Joshua Jackson], who fatally longs for the love of Joey Potter and shares his feelings of love with his best friend Dawson in the process making it difficult for both the lovers. However, by twists and turns Pacey finds himself in the arms of his dream girl, Joey Potter.

Jen Lindley [played by Michelle Williams], another character who longs for a date but spurns all romantic advances with apprehension however falls in love with a bass player who breaks her heart. She then comes across Dawson, in whose friendship she finds comfort and love that she yearned for all through the years. They have a brief romance but quickly come out of it and discover their love and comfort lay in their friendship rather than in romance. Jen and Dawson ultimately grow stronger in their friendship.

These four characters become the heart and soul of the show - through the six seasons of the show - growing up amidst the turbulence of their careers, dreams, college, romance and day-to-day struggle in their lives. In the end all the characters come up victorious becoming stronger and more confident and above all become life-long friends.

Dawon's Creek has become the trendsetter and inspiration to many a teenage based television themes such as "The O.C.", "Gilmore Girls", "One Tree Hill" and "Gossip Girl". The show became a phenomenal success in Australia too. Even "Songs from Dawson's Creek" got released in 1999 and "Songs from Dawson's Creek - Volume 2" released in 2001. Both peaked at #1 on Australian Album Chart.
