Katie Holmes who never wanted to become an actress in her childhood today is one of the famous actresses in Hollywood. At the behest of her mother Kathleen Holmes, Katie Holmes joined Margaret O'Brien's Modeling School in Toledo. She later attended a modeling convention in New York City in 1996, where she met a talent scout from Los Angeles who, discovering the inherent talent in her encouraged Katie Holmes to move to Hollywood.

Katie Holmes first performed a monologue from Harper Lee's novel "To Kill a Mockingbird". Later she got a leading role in "The Ice Storm" directed by Ang Lee. She then went back to Toledo to complete her high school studies during which period she refused an offer to act 'Buffy' in "Buffy the Vampire Slayer". But she still indulged in her newfound passion by starring in local theater production of Damn Yankees.

Katie Holmes learnt that Kevin Williamson of "Scream" {1996} fame is looking for actors for his upcoming television teenage drama "Dawson's Creek". Katie Holmes auditioned the part of Joey Potter on a video tape shot in her basement while her mother read Dawson's lines and then sent in the tape to the casting couch of "Dawson's Creek", who were pretty well impressed by her work on the tape.

Katie Holmes thus got into the role of Joey Potter, the bubbly, sultry lively, wily go-getter person. For five years her stunning performance on Dawson's Creek {128 episodes: 1998-2003} as Joey Potter won rave reviews from the press.

Katie Holmes during her early years in acting has described herself as being a small actress. She said, "It's not like I have a lot of stuff that's great just waiting for me to sign on to," and further described her movie career as "a string of bombs".

However, Katie Holmes began her movie career with "Disturbing Behavior" {1998} and won the MTV Award for Best Breakthrough Performance. She then appeared in Kevin Williamson-written-and-directed movie "Teaching Mrs. Tingle" {1999} in which she plays a desperate A-Grade student in need of scholarship. Katie Holmes went on to act in several movies such as "Phone Booth" {2002}, "Pieces of April" {2003}, "Batman Begins" {2005}, "Thank You for Smoking" (2006} and "Mad Money" {2008}. Katie Holmes received several nominations for awards for her acting skills. Katie Holmes who described herself as a small actress has today joined the big league of superstars and is quite popular with moviegoers across the world.
